State 100km Road Cycling Championships
Wandi 8 August 2010

A fine and sunny morning greeted riders and supporters alike at Wandi to-day for this staging of the State 100km Road Championships. The morning may have been fine, but it was very cold with the temperature dropping to 2 degrees. Never the less 73 riders greeted the starter for 12 laps of the 8.5km Wandi circuit.

Riders warmed up quickly and at the end of the 2nd lap 4 riders, Paul Watts, Peter Griffin, Shaun O’Neil & Andy Brierley had opened up a 1 minute lead over the peleton. After the end of the 3rd lap the lead had increased to 1 min 30 sec. This was the biggest it was to get and over the next 4 laps the lead varied between 45 secs and 1 min 10 secs. Clearly the peleton had the break covered and after 7 laps it was all over.

After 8 laps a group of 10 riders opened up a 20 sec gap, but at the completion of 9 laps this group settled down to 6 riders, Sam Smith, Sam Davis, Matt Irvine, Greig Watson, Elliott Wells and Dean Gathercole and they set about building on the lead that they had established. The gap grew to 50 secs after the 10th lap and then was 1min 40 secs at the bell. A strong effort by the peleton reduced this to 40secs at the finish. Results follow.

Craig Johns and Mat Irvine fighting out the finish of “B” grade

13th December 2009

Extremely hot conditions faced the riders to-day and with the old Cannigvale circuit being used for the first time in three seasons very fast racing was inevitable.  In A grade a large field of in excess of 30 riders faced the starter and it wasn't long before a break was established.  However as is usual on Canningvale it was brought back only to have another develop and again be overrun.  It wasn't until the half way point of the 50 min Criterium that a solid break of five established a lead.  These riders were Sam Davis, Karl Evans, J Spragg, Chris Glasby and Stephen Halpin.  They settled down into a regular pace and looked strong.  Shortly the two Michaels, Fitzgerald and Freiburg set out in pursuit, however the heat over took them and they did not get on.  The leading five held on for a good win.

In B grade over 50 riders started the hot event, but the riders concious of the heat basically stayed to-gether for the entire event.
